How Inherita Works

Your proof‑of‑life monitoring vault & emergency Rescue Mode, in one simple system. Keep living your life—if you ever go inactive beyond a grace period you set, Inherita privately delivers what your loved ones and close contacts need, exactly when they need it.

It’s a personal alarm for your life. While you’re OK, nothing happens. If you aren’t, Inherita executes your plan—automatically, privately, and securely .
1) Add Assets

Financials, home, devices, passwords, last wishes, pet care, links.

2) Add Beneficiaries

Invite now (or not). Each gets a personal hint to unlock only their share.

3) Set Timers

Proof‑of‑Life: 14 days default, adjustable between 1 and 365.

4) Optional Rescue

24‑hour emergency instructions in clear text for urgent situations.

Live normally — app quietly resets your “last proof”. No proof for 14d: switch arms. 3d email notice with cancel./veto button Information assets deliver if still silent.

Assets You Can Add

Everything here is encrypted by default (AES‑256‑GCM). Add items individually or by category. You can assign multiple beneficiaries per item.

Financial

A single, authoritative place for bank accounts, brokerage and 401(k) references, and life insurance policy numbers, including custodians and advisor contacts—enough for loved ones to locate funds and documents without a scavenger hunt.

Auto

Keep VIN, plate, lender/lease info, and clear notes on where the keys are so a spouse or executor can transfer, insure, or sell vehicles without delays.

Home

Document the property address, mortgage/HOA details, and the precise safe locations or lockboxes—everything a family needs to manage the household confidently.

Email

Note the provider, step‑by‑step recovery guidance, and how to access the account later via your password manager or device—without storing actual passwords in plaintext.

Social Media

List the profiles to manage or close with links and any memorialization instructions so your online presence is handled respectfully and on your terms.

Passwords

Describe the master password location or instructions for your password manager and where to find recovery keys—so heirs can access accounts without exposing secrets prematurely.

Crypto

Provide wallets and how to access them—hardware locations, passphrase procedures, or private keys. No method is perfect, but Inherita avoids lawyers misplacing keys, fire damage to paper copies, etc.

Safe Deposit Box

Record the bank and box number along with exactly where the key/card is kept—a simple detail that saves days of confusion.

Insurance

Centralize policy numbers, carrier info, and your agent contact for life, health, home, or auto so claims can begin immediately if needed.

Security

Share essential alarm codes, gate codes, and stored device passcodes so trusted people can access property and protect it without forcing doors or calling a locksmith.

Electronic Devices

Note phone/computer codes, where each device is kept, and any recovery steps or trusted contacts—crucial for retrieving photos, documents, or 2FA tokens.

Business

Keep operating agreements, shares, and key contacts together so a partner or successor can stabilize operations without guesswork.

Digital Accounts

Outline streaming, domains, and cloud services to transfer or close, with practical notes that save time and avoid billing surprises.

Medical

Provide healthcare directives, prescriptions, and allergies with physician and plan details so family can advocate for you accurately in the event you are incapacitated.

Heirlooms

Clarify which items to pass on, where they’re kept, and any provenance—guidance that reduces conflict and preserves stories.

Last Wishes

Share funeral instructions and heartfelt final messages that arrive privately and on time—never lost in a drawer or forgotten.

🐾
Pet Care

Capture vet details, meds, feeding, and trusted sitter info so your animals are cared for exactly as you intended.

Link

Point to YouTube videos, Dropbox/Drive folders, or any important URL with context, keeping originals where they belong while instructions live here.

Adding an Asset
Choose category (e.g., Financial).
Write notes / upload files — encrypted locally.
Assign beneficiaries (one or many).
Save — we wrap keys for each beneficiary.
Tip: Keep high‑sensitivity secrets in encrypted notes that release post‑switch, not in Rescue.
Best Practices
  • Use descriptive titles (“Brokerage — Fidelity”).
  • For passwords, consider pointing to your manager’s master key location rather than listing passwords, but either method works with our App.
  • Include “where to find originals” for important papers.
  • Keep Rescue content practical and non‑sensitive.

Beneficiaries & Invites

Add people by name + email (phone optional). Each relationship uses a personal hint answer to unlock that person’s share—only when release conditions are met.

Invite Now (Recommended)

Beneficiaries get an email to confirm their address and set their own personal hint answer. Status flips to Active so you know they’re reachable and they answered the hint correctly.

  • Pro: No surprises later; unlock is smoother when the time comes.
  • Pro: You’ll see green checkmarks in “My Trusts” once they confirm.
Keep It Quiet (No upfront email)

We won’t contact them unless your switch flips. You set the hint & answer now (we store only a salted hash + wrapped key, best practices for this scenario).

  • Pro: Maximum privacy; no worry or expectation created.
  • Consider: Use answers only they’d know; case‑sensitive; update if relationships change.
Beneficiary Basics
  • Assign per category or per item; one asset can have multiple recipients.
  • Change emails anytime; re‑invite if they switch addresses.
  • Recipients do not need the app—secure web works fine.
Hint & Unlock
  • We wrap each person’s key with their hint answer (Argon2‑hardened).
  • We store a salted hash—not the answer itself.
  • On release, they verify email + answer to decrypt only their share.

Proof‑of‑Life Monitor (Dead Man’s Switch)

Inherita watches for lightweight “proofs” of activity. If nothing arrives for long enough, the switch arms, then—after a short veto window—releases assets.

What counts as “proof”?
  • Step samples from Health (opt‑in)
  • Recent “exit”/coarse movement
  • Opening the app
  • HealthKit Steps
You can tune proofs in Settings → Proof of Life. Conservative defaults reduce false triggers.
Travel & Off‑Grid
  • Adjust sensitivity or pause monitoring for trips (e.g., long flights).
  • Rescue Mode is separate—use it only for short, higher‑risk windows.
Defaults: Days until switch: 14 Response window: 3 days
Change both in Settings → Proof of Life per your tolerance for accurate information release.

Release Timing & Granularity

Two‑Stage Safety
  1. Days until switch (default 14): If no proof for this span, the switch arms.
  2. Response period (default 3): You get urgent alerts to cancel if you're capable.
If still silent after the response window, assets release to assigned recipients.
Granularity
  • Set timing globally, and optionally per category for critical items.
  • Preview beneficiary view under My Trusts by adding yourself as a beneficiary.
What beneficiaries see
  • Secure email with your name and a private access link.
  • Email/identity check and their personal hint answer.
  • Decrypted categories you assigned to them (only theirs).
Note: Rescue instructions are separate and not encrypted for speed (see below).

Rescue Mode (24‑hour)

A faster lane for emergencies. Use when hours matter (solo trip, high‑risk work, adventure travel which is not off-grid; Inherita requires an active internet connection to function.)

How it works
  • If no proof for ~24 hours, we send your Rescue Note to your chosen contacts.
  • Clear text by design — no decryption steps for recipients.
  • Auto‑disable or toggle off when you’re back.
Rescue is completely independent of encrypted legacy assets.
What to include
  • Who to call first & medical notes (allergies, conditions).
  • Last place/route, itinerary, building access info.
  • Other contacts to coordinate with.
Do not put sensitive secrets here. Keep those in encrypted assets.
Not an emergency responder: Rescue Mode notifies your contacts with actionable info to assist them in locating and helping you with the appropriate authorities (when applicable). In an immediate danger situation, call local emergency services first.
False alarm?
  • Open the app to record fresh proof and pause Rescue if needed.
  • Send a quick follow‑up to contacts to clarify.
  • Review permissions algorithms (steps/exit) to reduce future triggers.

Notifications & Emails

Delivery channels
  • Email for you (response window alerts). Soon, APN Push Notices.
  • Email (and soon, SMS) to beneficiaries upon release.
  • Rescue contacts receive plaintext instructions.
Reliability tips
  • Ask contacts to whitelist your sender domain.
  • Keep emails current; update if addresses change.

Privacy & Security

Zero‑knowledge design
  • Vaults encrypted with AES‑256‑GCM on device.
  • Passwords stored as Argon2 hashes—never plaintext.
  • Per‑beneficiary wraps using their hint answer (Argon2‑hardened).
Secure delivery
  • HTTPS/TLS for all transport; recipients unlock only their share.
  • No backdoors—our team can’t read your encrypted notes.
  • Export or delete your data any time from Account.
Reminder: Be aware of your internet connection with Rescue Mode. Prolonged lack of access will trigger notices to your Rescue Contacts.

Troubleshooting

Likely a fresh background proof (steps/exit) reset the timer. Check Account → Status to see last proof. Contact Support if you beleive this to be an error.

Device might have been off, internet/wifi unavailable, or permissions disabled for ~24h. Please promptly notify contacts of the issue.

No worries, just uncheck the "Notify Now" box when you add the contact beneficiary. They won't receive any notices unless you become inactive for the specified duration. Please ensure your hint will provide enough information for them to answer it correctly. We don't store the hint answer, they will need it to decrypt your information assets.

Update to the latest version and ensure background refresh is allowed. Pull to refresh; delivery may lag occasionally, but your data remains safe.

Glossary

Proof‑of‑Life (PoL)
Signals that you’re active (steps/exit/app use). Lack of proof arms the switch.

Dead Man’s Switch (DMS)
Another name for the PoL based release system.

Days until switch
Inactivity window before arming (default 14).
Response period
Final window to cancel ("veto") by email before release (default 3).

Rescue Mode
24‑hour cleartext instructions to your trusted contacts for emergencies.

Hint answer
Personal unlock key per beneficiary; stored as a salted hash(industry standard avoids our servers ever seeing your answers); used to unwrap their decryption key.

After setup, you’ll likely never need Inherita to trigger—like an insurance policy or seatbelt. But having it in place spares loved ones from uncertainty, and lets you be assured knowing your plan is ready.
