Informative answers about how Inherita works.
What Inherita is—and isn’t.
Inherita is a proof‑of‑life monitor & vault, with an optional 24‑hour Rescue Mode. While you’re active, nothing is sent. If you go quiet beyond a grace period you set, the system privately delivers the information your contacts (assignees/beneficiaries) will need.
No. Inherita does not create legal documents or give legal advice. It securely stores and delivers the instructions and files you provide, alongside timing rules you configure, so your family or partners can act without guesswork.
No. Recipients can use a secure web link on any standard browser. They verify their email and answer a personal hint to unlock only the items you assigned to them.
Quiet by default. Protective when it needs to be.
You choose a Days‑until‑switch window (default 14 days). If no proof (i.e. steps or GPS movement) arrives for that duration, the switch arms and you receive urgent alerts for a veto window (default 3 days). If you’re still silent when the veto period ends, releases begin.
Small signals of daily activity:
For long flights or trips, you can pause monitoring or extend sensitivity. Opening the app always records fresh proof and resets your timer.
Use the veto email alert, or simply open the app to register proof. Both cancel the pending release and return you to normal monitoring.
For situations where hours matter, not days.
Rescue Mode sends a concise plain‑text Rescue Note to your chosen contacts if no proof-of-life arrives for 24 hours. It’s intentionally unencrypted so they can act fast—use it for rescue logistics, not sensitive secrets.
Keep it practical and non‑sensitive:
Only the right person sees only their share.
Invite Now: we email the person that they've been added to your Inherita App, and they immediately confirm their personal hint answer. Status shows as Active so you know they’re reachable.
Keep It Quiet: we won’t contact them unless your switch flips. You set a hint + answer now; we store a salted hash of the answer and wrap their decryption key with it. This means you and your contacts share information through E2EE (end-to-end encryption) and our servers never touch your information.
We don’t store the answer itself. Be carefule to choose a hint and answer that are both secure (ie difficult to guess randomly) AND known to your contacts/assignees in the event you are not able to assist them in answering it. (Alternatively switch them to Invite Now so they immediately confirm they know the answer.)
No. A secure web browser is enough: we notify the email you assigned, then prompt for the personal hint answer to decrypt their items...
Reliable alerts; minimal noise.
You get push/email for warnings of inactivity and veto alerts. Beneficiaries receive email (and soon SMS) only after your release conditions are met. Rescue contacts get your plain‑text Rescue Note if Rescue Mode triggers.
Ask contacts to whitelist the sender domain inherita.com.
Zero‑knowledge by design.
Vault content is encrypted on your device with AES‑256‑GCM. Passwords are stored as Argon2 hashes (never plaintext). Each beneficiary’s decryption key is wrapped with their personal hint answer (also Argon2‑hardened). All transport uses HTTPS/TLS. There are no backdoors—we can’t read your encrypted notes, nor can anyone else except your beneficiary. Choose Hints/Answers accordingly, and consider leaving them a paper hint answer as well.
Yes. The app considers any GPS movement of more than 300 feet a proof of life. Similarly, ten staps in a day is considered activity. If you do not keep your iphone with me (i.e. leave it at a desk for days at a time, the app will not detect inactivity. Most individuals typical daily use will work fine with our PoL monitor algorithm.
Intentionally, no. Rescue is designed for speed in short‑horizon emergencies, so the note is sent in clear text to your chosen contacts. Keep only practical, non‑sensitive logistics there; put secrets in encrypted items that release after Proof‑of‑Life rules are met.
It’s your data. You decide.
Never. No ads, no third party data brokers, noone other than your assignees/beneficiaries/contacts can see your information - not even your lawyers or our lawyers :)
See Account → Status for the latest proof and current timers. Adjust behavior under Settings → Proof of Life.
Common issues, straightforward fixes.
A fresh background proof (steps, exit, or an app open) likely reset your timer. Check Account → Status for the last proof, and tighten proof thresholds in Settings if you prefer stricter behavior.
Your device may have been off or permissions disabled for ~24 hours. Open the app to refresh proof, adjust permissions, and—if contacts were notified—send them a follow‑up to clarify. Contact support if you believe there is an error.
Confirm your email matches where your notice was received. Think of any variations (case-sensitive) of the Hint/Answer your relative set. We are not able to decrypt information, but you may contact us for general assistance in this difficult time.
Reminder: In immediate danger, always contact local emergency services first. Inherita notifies your contacts with the information you provided; it’s not an emergency responder.
